  FAQs

01. Does the UniGuard work with Windows 95, Windows 98 , Windows NT, Windows XP , Unix, Linux, Solaris and other platforms?
Yes. The UniGuard and Port Authority are independent of the operating system.

02. Can the UniGuard device be shipped overseas?
Yes, but only with an export license supplied by the Defence Department, Out of Band Solutions has a General export license for Asia Pacific countries.

03. Does UniGuard unit work with PcAnywhere, Reachout, Lap Link, or other remote control programs?
Yes. The UniGuard/Port Authority operates just like a standard modem to any communications program.

04. Will the UniGuard work with an internal PC modem.
No. To encrypt a session through an internal modem you would use the USB SSE (Secure Session Encryptor) device and SST (Secure Session Terminal) software. The software diverts all signals heading out of the internal modem to the USB encryptor first, before sending it out the modem fully encrypted.

05. Does the UniGuard come WITHOUT its own internal modem?
The UG01 is a Uniguard encryptor without a modem and is ideal to add to existing modems between the modem and the network device.

06. What is the highest speed for encryption (communication from a remote DES-Modem)?
38400 baud (when set for Single DES) and 19200 baud (when set for Triple DES.) A faster version of the UniGuard (UniGuard-DDM) can run at 38400 Baud Triple DES.

07. Can the UniGuard be set for Triple DES encryption?
Uniguard and Port Authorities can be set for Single DES, Triple DES or No encryption.

08. Can a UniGuard operate in synchronous mode?
No, asynchronous mode only.

09. What types of authentication does the UniGuard offer?
RSA SecureID (built in, no need for ACE server connection, independent of the network status), Password and ID, Challenge Response Token, Password and ID/ encryption, Full Triple DES encryption.

10. Does the UniGuard have a network interface port?
No, but all CDI products have an optional network interface. The IP option allows you to manage the CDI device over IP or via modem. It is possible to dial into a Port Authority or Uniguard, authenticate and then hold a PPP session or Telnet back out of the CDI device to a location. Likewise you can connect to the CDI Device over IP, authenticate and then connect serially to host devices, all encrypted in up to Triple DES over IP.

11. Do I use the DDM for terminal sessions?
No, the DDM is only used for programming and managing the remote and local devices. For terminal sessions you would use your normal terminal emulation program such as Hyperterminal or CDI’s Secure Session Terminal (SST)

12. How does the DDM manage device securely?
The DDM encrypts all its sessions in single or triple DES (Software encryption) with its own set of management keys that are independent of the session keys used by the CDI devices during sessions.

13. Does the CDI system have an audit trail?
Yes, CDI devices record log in information and device activity for every successful and unsuccessful session. When the DDM polls the device it retrieves this information and compiles it in a customisable format which can then be transferred to a data logging and auditing system.

14. Can Uniguards be used for SCADA applications?
CDI has developed the Uniguard DG that uses the same FIPS140-2 and NIST approved encryption but is suited to the SCADA environment. The Uniguard DG is a simple drop in solution for existing SCADA systems whether over PSTN, ISDN, Fibre, Wireless or Radio.

15. Does the Port Authority support Syslog?
Yes, Port Authorities with the IP option support Syslog in real time, the DDM is used to program the Syslog server address at the time of programming. The Syslog feature can forward syslog information from connected devices as well as the status of the Port Authority.

16. I am connecting to a PBX or other DCE device and the UniGuard drops the call after authentication.
Most PBX ports are configured as DCE devices and require a Null Modem connector to operate with the UniGuard. The UniGuard is also configured as a DCE so it needs a null modem connector to communicate with another DCE. You can use a null modem adapter or call CDI support for a CDI null modem connector.

17. I want to know about the UniGuard’s internal modem?
The UniGuard contains a MultiTech MT5634ZBA V90 modem. When working on Windows 98, NT or XP platforms, this modem should be added to the modem list in the Windows Control Panel.

18. Are UniGuard units flash upgradeable?
Yes, from version 7.01 and up. This can be done automatically from the DDM. Port Authorities are flash upgradable as are the optional IP cards. CDI is continually adding more functionality to the product firmware

19. Are there any special settings that the UniGuard needs to be set for when working on Windows 95, 98, NT or XP platforms?
Yes, the baud rate, data bits and parity of the UniGuard should be the same as the host application it is connected to. The Host to Modem Access option should be set for Enable with Bypass.

20. Are there any specials settings for Dial up Networking?
When dialing into a UniGuard using HyperTerminal dialout or Dialup Network, the option Bring Up Terminal After Dialing under Connection control should be Enabled (checkmarked).

21. Are there any special settings that the UniGuard needs to be set for when connected to a Unix host system?
Yes, the baud rate, data bits and parity of the UniGuard should be the same as the Unix host application it is connected to. The Host to Modem Access option should be set for Disabled. This prevents any terminal messages from confusing the UniGuard.

22. Are there any special Issues with Sun Solaris serial ports?
Yes, We offer a special connector for the SUN Sparc Station that overcomes the erratic behavior of this port when connected to a dial modem. There are also changes that need to made to the etc/default/login file.

23. Are there any issues connecting to Cisco routers?
When the UniGuard is connected to a Cisco Router (2500 series, 4500 series, 3600 series) a special host adapter can be provided between the UniGuard host port and host application. Contact CDI about this special adapter.

24. What sort of product support do you offer?
Out of Band Solutions is set-up to provide telephone and email support during normal business hours. Onsite technical support and training is also possible. With branches in the USA and UK we can provide round the clock service.

25. What warranty do I get with the product?
All CDI products come with a 1 year return to base warranty which can be extended up to a 3 year, advanced replacement warranty.
